The trade-off problem

With the ZTE Axon 20, the trade-off between screen quality and image quality with result is… a total failure. Camera of the machine is very poor quality, probably is lack of light, lack of detail, image “flat” and many aberrations. The screen that contains the camera is clearly broken. ZTE Axon 20 removes this defect but replaces it with a bad screen area. ZTE’s choice of a smartphone with an under-screen camera is now primarily for spiritual benefits, not with any practical benefits. Perhaps it is not exaggerated to say that these flaws have made the under-screen camera progress much less meaningful … Over the past 3 years, we have gotten used to the experience of a screen with a defect in the middle. : the “groove” of the “rabbit’s ear”, the water drop or the charm mole.

But saying that doesn’t mean the under-screen camera will be forever bad idea. In fact, smartphone manufacturers had to deal with the impossible, having to make “balance” trade-offs. For example, the stronger the chip, the easier it is to cause heat dissipation problems. The camera is better (large sensor), the thicker it is. The sharper of the screen, the more draining of the battery …

Over time, the advancement of technology will be even low-cost smartphones to have 8-core chips, cameras and  battery’s life will be one more than 1 day of use.

The trade-offs are still there, but they’re a lot easier when the chips can hold billions of transistors without “burning” too much electricity. The batteries have a capacity of up to 4000mAh without too much electric power. When the batteries have a capacity of up to 4000mAh without being not too big and when the screen changes to OLED … We have to believe that display technology and sensor technology will continue to improve, to be better and better

Future ahead

But most importantly,  producers also have an incredibly powerful weapon in right now: AI and computational photography. By stitching together multiple frames, Google was able to turn poor quality digital zoom photos into an overall photo with the same amount of detail as optical zoom. Both Apple and Google make good low-light shots even with a much smaller sensor than the competition. The same principle can be applied to the camera under the screen to improve the quality of photos.

Just the AI helps to create a good enough image quality, the pixel density on the screen can be increased to enhance the image quality, bringing the “perfect” experience back to its name. The future of under-screen camera technology has just unfolded – better experiences await us.
